“I want to be the king of your heart / Let's fall apart and start again” – the King

We have a very special SubMonth Music Review for you…
IT IS A FOUR SONG FEATURE!
WHOOOOOO
We’ll be reviewing four very different songs suggested by our dear subscribers! We hope you enjoy this review and maybe find a new song you’ll want to listen to.

Amtrak
Los Retros
26 April 2021
“Will we, ever find
A way to make our time last forever?
Because I begin to miss you.”
Ria: This song has a soothing, comforting tone. The electric guitar that stood out against the soft bass, piano, and drums set a tone that was more comforting than pop-rocky. What I love most about this song is its genuinity. Although I feel like I listened to the song at the wrong time, (cuz honestly I'm feeling so sleepy right now) the song would be better played if you were with your someone special. From the lyrics, you can clearly see that it's a love song to someone. So, sing this to the person you love.
"My love, will you take my hand with virtue?
For time has proved that I do, love you"
Jhanya: A very beautiful and sincere love song that took me by surprise upon listening. From the starting lyrics I quoted above, to “Remember I am your lover forever” and the calming instrumentation, Mauri Tapia’s soothing voice gives the listener quite the experience. Amtrak is a song that gives the listener a sense of comfort, familiarity, and an opportunity to receive love. It’s been some time since I listened to an english love song that gave me chills from how soothing it is.

The King
Sarah Kinsley
4 June 2021
“I want to be the king of your heart
Let’s fall apart and start again
You’ll see the end of me.”
Ria: This is the first song I’ve heard from this artist and I kinda love it. I love Sarah’s vocals so much! She has great range which she showed in the song. From the high falsettos to a sorta lower note that not all female artists really use. The song’s instrumentation is also really cool. I kinda liked the mix of all the instruments. Also!! I loved the fact that the melody was a mix of off-beat and on-beat. It might not really be other people’s type of music, but I loved the mix. It really fits the song and made the song unique, as a whole.
"Before we get older let’s do everything
You’re scared of when it’s over
You’re still young and you’re still free."
Jhanya: Upon first listening one may think that this song is mainly about romantic love given that there are lyrics that literally say “I want to be the king of your heart”. But once you try to really understand the song and immerse yourself in the experience, you come to realize that it’s more about personal growth, moving beyond the past, and embracing the opportunities to come in the future. In The King (song) Kinsley tells the listeners how growing old is inevitable, but how you grow up is all up to you. On a technical note, this song is very electric-pop from it’s piano buildup to the drums and “trippy” synth which really gives off a euphoric feel. With these, I can see why listeners say the track is “what it sounds like to truly be alive.”.

Skinny Dipping
Sabrina Carpenter
9 September 2021
“It’d be so nice, right? Right?
If we could take it all off and just exist”
Ria: The song is full of synths and a really short interlude (this is kinda off for me). The lyrics are also kinda witty with the metaphor of swimming and skinny dipping. I just feel that this probably didn't hit me as much because I've heard her other songs and I know this song could've been better. Additionally, I feel like there was supposed to be a drop intended somewhere, but it really just didn't hit. And, I was absolutely confused with why she “sung” her verses like that. It’s between rapping and talking. It would have been a lot better if she chose one between the two. It would’ve made the song a lot better.
“It'd be so nice, right? Right?
If we could take it all off and just exist"
Jhanya: I cannot express how annoyed I was when I listened to the song. The transitions between the different parts of the song have to be the worst I’ve heard in a while. As much as I liked the chorus of the song, the verses really bothered me. It felt like Sabrina was rapping but also wasn’t. Idk commit to it if you wanna rap… I guess? The message of the song is good, and Sabrina put her heart into it, talking about her past. But the talking parts just took me out of the listening experience and made it feel like a mish-mash of sounds as the transitions in between weren’t the smoothest.

Shivers
Ed Sheeran
10 September 2021
“I wanna be that guy, I wanna kiss your eyes
I wanna drink that smile, I wanna feel like I’m
Like my soul’s on fire, I wanna stay up all day and all night.”
Ria: The intro of this song gave me such Bad Habits vibes HAHAHAHAHAH. However, between this song and Bad Habits, I prefer Bad Habits. This song is STILL a banger though. I love that Ed Sheeran showed us the view of the man in the relationship. How he also feels the sweet parts, the “butterfly flutters' ', the “shivers”, and the longing to be with your partner even after the night has passed. With this second single, I absolutely cannot wait for the whole album.
“Ooh, I love it when you do it like that
And when you're closer, give me the shivers”
Jhanya: Shivers instantly took me back to Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You era with it’s clapping, scatting, and soft melody. Though I say this, it is in no way inferior to the world-dominating single. The extremely catchy chorus is just an absolute vibe that will definitely have the listener tapping, bopping, or dancing to the beat throughout the whole song. I’m gonna go out and say that this has been the most electrifying single released so far this year (I'm sorry Bad Habits and Ria xD). Sheeran’s ability to create trendy masterpieces never disappoints and he hasn’t missed ever since his last album, Divide. I definitely can’t wait for the full album next month!
Final Thoughts
Ria: Super huge thanks to our readers who suggested this unique mix of songs! I’m so happy that I was able to learn about Los Retros and Sarah Kinsley. I’m super excited to listen to other songs (right after I write this review). I’m always looking forward to widening my music genres and learning about new artists and you just gave me two new artists to listen to, so thank you!! To those who suggested music that wasn’t chosen, we apologize (this would be kpop songs). Right now, we aren’t a hundred percent sure on how to really review them in the best way possible, and we wouldn’t want to offend anyone. We’ll be sure to review some top kpop songs once we figure this out, especially since I’m a Blink and Army (hihi V bias here!!). I hope to you guys understand!! <3
Jhanya: I absolutely loved this pretty mixed bag of music suggestions from our readers! I’m always in search of new artists to listen to so Los Retros and Sarah Kinsley were very welcome new additions to my list. I’m definitely listening to more of their tracks in the future. Like Ria, I would also just like to apologize for avoiding the kpop song suggestions. It’s not that we don’t like them or have anything against them, we just wanted to avoid offending their respective fandoms. Don’t worry though! Once we get used to it, maybe we can try them someday too hehe
