Last February, Conan Gray released a new energetic indie-pop single called Overdrive. Going from the sad and angry themes of his 2020 album Kid Krow, Conan started this year on a happy note. Singing about optimistic escapism and how sometimes, we really just have to live in the moment and enjoy life without worrying about what will happen next.
"Yeah, I know you're a stranger
But I'm likin' the danger
Of the 'I don't know'"
Ria: I liked the instrumentation and melody the best. It has a boppy edge and cool hooks throughout the song. It has that mainstream poppy vibe but a Conan Gray unique twist. The overlapping of the synth at the start of the song catches your attention first and the song doesn't fail to impress. And the bass throughout the song, which more or less acts like the beat and tempo of the song, adds to the hook of the song. Furthermore, the louder and boppier chorus in comparison to the verse highlights the chorus. The song also gives a really good dance beat in which I've already made a choreography to HAHAHAHA.
Anyway, technicalities aside, this song gives a wonderful meaning. According to Conan Gray, he “wanted to start the year off with a song to escape from reality for a little bit with. Something to scream into the showerhead and fantasize about secret lovers and alternate reckless lives we could’ve lived.” With the pandemic and the quarantine, and basically the crazy world we live in now, the song offers a good escape from reality. It tells us to live in the moment and experience love and all the things we can without any worries about what will happen next.
"All or nothin'
Let's just trust the night"
Jhanya: This song is a bop. That's it, that's my review.
Kidding hahahahah Seriously though, this song has been stuck in my head ever since we decided that we will write a review on it. Production-wise, it has a similar upbeat tune and instrumentation as Maniac, but it's on a different end of the spectrum with its message. Maniac talks about how some people start rumors about others and often call them bizarre terms like “maniac”, “manipulative", and other negative terms, but in reality, they are the ones who are crazy. Overdrive, on the other hand, focuses on the present, not worrying about the future, and just enjoying what you are experiencing now, both romantically and not.
This, to be honest, delivers a great message. After the hell that we’ve been through in the year 2020, 2021, though the pandemic is still not over, should be a year where we congratulate ourselves for surviving whatever 2020 was and try to live life to the fullest one step at a time. Sure there is still the future to think about, but at times we just have to chill and “trust in the night”. Overall, I loved the chill, happy and memorable melody of the song. Every time I listen to it, I just wanna dance and bop any part of my body available to the beat. It’s that catchy! And it’s also the type of song you listen to and vibe with when you’re driving or riding down a highway.
