Last May 2021, Ben&Ben, a folk pop-pop rock Philippine band, released a new single called Magpahinga. The song offers comforting words to rest and take a breather and remember to care for oneself in these tough times.

Ria: Magpahinga directly translates to “to rest” in English. This encapsulates the wonderful meaning of Ben&Ben's new single. The song is telling us to rest and take a breather in the horrible situation we are in (pandemic). It gives great comfort to us to remember to prioritize our own physical, emotional, and mental health in this disastrous time. Aside from the meaning of the song, the beautiful piano runs, partners well with the song. It gives a calming, soothing vibe. Overall, this song is very meaningful and gives really comforting vibes. This song is highly similar to their other song Nakikinig ka ba sa Akin.

Jhanya: As Ria has mentioned, the song mainly tells us to give ourselves time to breathe amidst all the chaos that is happening in our lives and our country, the Philippines, right now. Despite all these problems, challenges, and hardships that we are facing, we should not forget about our personal well-being, as we too are important. But other than this, it also tells its listeners that they are not alone in facing these challenges.

The messages brought by the single are even more heightened with the instrumentals which mainly consist of the piano and violin that give it a strong nostalgic vibe. What caught my attention the most though are the bass sounds in the background which, I must say, are pretty new additions to the usual Ben&Ben ballad song structure. After doing a bit of research, and watching the lyric video, I found out that they used a Seaboard (I call it the “Super Keyboard '' coz it’s so OP). And it’s pretty cool to see that they’re trying new and unique things to try and add more to their songs.

Overall, Magpahinga is a very beautiful and emotional ballad with a message that is relevant to what is happening in our lives and country today. As Filipinos, it’s not always just about being resilient in everything that we do. Sometimes, we all deserve to rest too.
