Hello!! Welcome back to our reviews!! Today we have five single tracks taken from five different artists. It’s a pretty mixed selection since not many albums have been released. But!! This was still a blast to do and we hope you enjoy it! Take it awaaaay!

she's all i wanna be

Tate McRae

04 February 2022

"If you say she’s nothing to worry about,

then why’d you close your eyes when you said it out loud?"

Jhanya: Tate Mcrae is finally trying to find her own style! Similar to Conan Gray's "Heather" or Olivia Rodrigo's "Jealousy," “she’s all i wanna be” expresses the insecurities and jealousy that come when a partner says “they’re nothing to worry about”. However, what really caught my attention in this song are the instrumentation and Tate’s unique voice. The guitars give off a very 2010s vibe esp. during the verse, and then it switches up to the 80s rock vibe mixed with Tate’s very unique vocals. I particularly love the synth parts after the lines in the chorus because they blend so well with the other instruments and vocals. It seems there’s really a trend with bringing the old school back and we can see it from the teen artists nowadays, but I’m not complaining haha

“She’s got everything I don’t have

How could I ever compete with that?”

Ria: This song is definitely Rodrigo’s “jealousy” vibes. Although it’s a bit different, the concept is really similar. This song is also something I compared to her previous song “you broke me first” they have some similarities, but essentially it’s a different sound. The vocals here are fuller and less raspy which combines well with the instrumentation. I actually really agree with most of what Jhanya said. And I really am looking forward to more work from her. And talking more of the lyrics I’m actually quite happy that the song talks about her being more jealous of a girl and wanting to be her because she’s a good and nice girl. She’s not portrayed as a b*tch and the persona is spiting that she doesn’t deserve the guy. Quite the opposite, actually. And I’m really happy that this is the meaning because it’s also entirely possible to be jealous of another person who’s so perfect, so nice, and you’re feeling so guilty because she actually doesn’t deserve it. It also saves the world a little less hate which I think is needed.

Wait - from "Three Months"

Troye Sivan, Gordi

23 February 2022

"Could’ve broken me like glass in an emergency"

Jhanya: Very psychedelic, indie rock vibes coming from this song and it’s nice. I’ve never really listened to Sivan on a regular basis. His songs just pop up from my yearly playlists from time to time, but I like how the song got my attention because of Troye Sivan’s very soothing voice. The song overall isn’t very unique, but Sivan’s chill voice is what really keeps you listening to it.

“One thing I am sure of is everything will change”

Ria: Old. Indie. Rock. Vibes. I loved this song the most from our selection this week. Although I’m probably really biased since I’ve been obsessed with Troye Sivan lately. Anyway, I loved the melody and instrumentation of this song. They both blended well together with the vocals!! I loved the soothing melody and softness to it. It made me really feel quite nostalgic and just in that relaxed mode (which I really needed after the past two weeks 🤪🥴). This is actually a common vibe in Sivan’s songs because this is what works so well with his voice but it really DOES fit him that each song sounds like a new one everytime.

West Coast

OneRepublic

25 February 2022

“Ain’t nothin' that you want’ll cost you more than time"

Jhanya: The perfect song to listen to while driving in this very hot weather. After listening to “West Coast” I feel like OneRepublic is finally back. I haven’t really been a fan of their songs in the last few years after their album “Oh My My” in 2016, but this latest single just gave me all the chill feels after listening. “West Coast” has been in the works for 5 years according to Ryan Tedder because they wanted to perfect the song and you can definitely feel that the song stands out from their recent releases. The song has the OneRepublic charm that comes with great production and Ryan’s beautiful vocals that match the soulful groove of the song. The addition of the strings in the prelude also adds more depth and soul to the song while listening.

“I could really use a dose of some paradise”

Ria: Definitely a driving song!! I haven’t been able to follow most of their songs the past few years but this is a really upbeat, chill song, great for road trips hehe. It had great productions and the vocals stand out but at the same time blend in well. This song has that oomph that makes you want to dance to it or maybe just enjoy jamming to it. I think this is a good, light song to listen to if you want to rewind.

COMPLETE MESS

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS)

2 March 2022

“This evanescence always fleeting like a flame”

Jhanya: I’m gonna be lying if I didn’t say that this song and “she’s all i wanna be” gave me similar vibes in terms of instrumentation, especially at the beginning with that lone guitar riff. It has a very old rock vibe to it, like that guitar riff before the bridge which was just so beautifully clean. “Complete Mess” pretty much solidifies 5SOS’s new Coldplay-like genre they’ve been slowly building up since Youngblood and CALM. Personally, I preferred their pop-rock roots, but this new style of theirs isn’t one to take lightly either, especially because of their dream-like harmonies and individual vocals that really blend well and lift up the instrumentation even more (I’m looking at you, Michael, for those smooth af vocals in the bridge). Kudos to the whole group for creating this song on their own. Can’t wait for the whole new album soon.

“I wanna be that guy, I wanna kiss your eyes

I wanna drink that smile, I wanna feel like I’m

Like my soul’s on fire, I wanna stay up all day and all night.”

Ria: I actually don’t know how to collect my thoughts for this. I’m really happy with their songs lately. They’ve been trying to switch things up a bit to fit their style the best so I get why this song might be a bit confusing (it is for me 😭) I still liked their older rock vibe songs compared to this, but the harmonies definitely slap!!! I mean come on, I gotta admit that those harmonies are ✨✨✨ I’m looking forward to more of their songs and seeing how they come as a group producing and writing all their songs on their own!!

Bones

Imagine Dragons

11 March 2022

“There was never wrong 'til there was right”

Jhanya: I-I-I can listen to this song every day. Another very dynamic song from this very creative band. For an artist with so many haters, Imagine Dragons still continues to release bop after bop with a mix of their own style through the years. “Bones” starts pretty quiet before developing into their usual style by stacking the instruments continuously before the chorus where everything comes together. Like other tracks from the band, there are a lot of different synth effects, brass instruments, and distortions used throughout the song that is brought up by their very catchy hook and chorus. Overall, it’s a very “big” and highly produced song that can hype you up once you listen to it.

I know it isn’t for everyone, because like I’ve said the band does have a lot of haters that aren’t into their style. But “Bones” is still an overall good song that goes pretty deep once you start understanding the lyrics.

“My Patience Is Waning, Is This Entertaining?”

Ria: Unlike Jhanya, this song was very “meh” for me. I feel like I expected more from them since they’ve released such bangers before that this really fell short. I mean the instrumentation was awesome, yes!! But in other aspects, it fell short for me. I didn’t get much except repeating lyrics and a pretty stagnant melody. Basically, the instrumentation carried this song.

Final Thoughts

Ria: So we’re back with a pretty hefty music review. I would like to apologize for the delay since I just finished my midterm weekssssss and wasn’t able to finish writing this yesterday. But anyway!! The tracks here are not exactly our usual pop kinda vibe-y music and it’s actually quite nice to see older artists coming out to release more music and finding or exploring new sounds. My favorite would have to be “Wait” just because I’m currently really biased towards Troye Sivan but all the other songs I’ve also kinda enjoyed, some more than others hehe Anyway, we’ll see you in another two weeks!!! 💖

Jhanya: And we’re back again after 2 weeks with a pretty hefty review for you guys! It’s been a pretty chill first quarter of the year for me in terms of the song releases because nothing has really caught my attention yet. But the tracks we’ve reviewed here were very interesting and a great way to start the spring/summer season that really brings the heat. My favorite out of the five is definitely “West Coast” because it’s been stuck in my head ever since it came out (it actually took a break, and then I heard it again in one of DH’s ig stories so now it’s stuck again), but “Bones” is a very close runner-up because I loved how dynamic the whole listening experience was. I also liked how each of the songs was unique on their own but also pretty similar to each other in terms of the vibe that they give and how they hook the listeners through their heavy production and instrumentations.

This was a very interesting mix of songs which I liked and I can’t wait for our next review in 2 weeks! Movie time again hehe
