"Now suddenly you're asking for it back
Could you tell me, where'd you get the nerve?
Yeah, you could say you miss all that we had
But I don't really care how bad it hurts
When you broke me first"
you broke me first tells a story of a person whose toxic ex has come back wanting to rekindle their past relationship. But with the past, toxic relationship, the person refuses her ex saying he was the one who broke her first. Many people have been through different relationships — good ones, bad ones, toxic ones — and all of us have experienced heartaches, fallouts, and feeling like we’ve become another person. The song tells us to put ourselves first and not compromise who we are for a toxic relationship. It is important to love ourselves and accept ourselves fully before committing to another person.
Tate McRae what a queen (who is younger than me!!). She has a really unique voice that makes this song stand up and be different from others. Add in the really good synth drops and this song is a really really vibe-y, dance-y song to emote to. Which is why this song has become one of my favorites.
"When shit don't go your way you needed me to fix it
And like me, I did"
If there is one thing I love about the song, it has to be the lyrics. It perfectly encapsulates toxic relationships. But, the singer in this song is finally not letting the a**hole in. The lyrics also show both the pain, anger, and sadness of the singer.
To be honest, I definitely prefer the covers made by Our Last Night and Connor Maynard, which in my opinion give off stronger emotions and show the anger and pain that I didn't feel as much in the original song. I'm also not a fan of that beat drop after the "you broke me first" Idk, it feels unnecessary? I see that she's trying to pull some vibes from Billie Eilish, but Idk, the overall production doesn't work as much for me. Don't get me wrong, I fangirl over the drums, but as a whole, the song just really feels lacking for me.
