Save Your Tears (with Ariana Grande) (Remix) is another collaboration between The Weeknd and Ariana Grande. Save Your Tears is The Weeknd’s hit track from the 2020 record-breaking album After Hours.
"Met you once under a Pisces moon
I kept my distance 'cause I know that you
Don't like when I'm with nobody else
I couldn't help it, I put you through hell"
Ria: I AM ABSOLUTELY, UTTERLY IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG. probably because of my Ariana Grande bias but this song really just gives me the best vibes ever. My favorite lines, of course, are Ariana Grande’s lines. I mean, duh. There’s another stanza for Ariana which you’ll probably see below. Thank you Jhanya <3 Anyways, I actually listened to Save Your Tears (remix) before the original version. It was actually because of this song I listened to The Weeknd’s whole After Hours album. This song is also somewhat of a comeback to Ariana (especially after her live performance) after the positions era.
I’m rambling. Let’s get on to the song itself. The vocals of Ariana Grande are absolutely soaring here. Her whistle notes and fast transitions from lower to higher registers to falsettos are unbelievable. And the fact that she was able to do it live?!?!?! WHAT A QUEEN. The harmonization of Abel and Ariana is also *chef’s kiss*. In their live performance. The song took to a lower and deeper vocal range and both their voices really complement each other. (it’s actually quite a nice relief from Ariana’s usually high, light voice) It is clearly seen that they are so comfortable with each other already (with the multiple collabs) and they’re basically just having fun. Aside from this, the instrumentation and melody of the song are super catchy. I actually listened to this song on repeat for like three days before stopping (sorry not sorry). The instrumentation of the song also really fits the vocals of the artists. It had a more prominent bass, drums, and guitar.
“I realize that it's much too late
And you deserve someone better”
Jhanya: Unlike Ria, I’m not gonna fangirl over this song (hit me with your violent reactions Ria ahahahaha). However, I am gonna give it the praise that it deserves. Save Your Tears wasn’t my favorite track in The Weeknd’s After Hours album, so I didn’t expect much for this remix/collab with Ariana, and boy was I wrong. This remix took the original song to a whole nother level, especially the vocals. From Ariana’s vocal prowess to her new verse, it all added to the message that the song was trying to convey.
Going to technicalities, if there was something I didn’t like about this remix it’s that they didn’t really change much in terms of production. This was my original issue with the original version of the song, and for this remix, it really lacked that final oomph in the last parts for it to be a real masterpiece. It felt kinda rushed after Ariana’s verse. Another thing to point out is how it’s shorter than the original song. I don’t like it coz they deprived us of 20 seconds of those beautiful harmonies and melody, but I still like that despite being shorter than the original, the meaning of the song was more emphasized and highlighted in this version. The addition of her new verse also gave us more insight into Save Your Tears’ story-telling about a relationship that became too toxic to function.
Ariana’s voice and technique are also a bit different in this remix. Despite those whistles in the background of the song, her rich, low register during the verse steals the show. To be honest, this is what made the remix stand out. Ariana deviating from her usual range made the song unpredictable and surprising to the listeners. I must also say that Save Your Tears (Remix) really showcased how Ariana has improved her ad-lib skills as every one of them was on point and for sure intentional.
Final Thoughts
Ria: Overall, this song just kills it. I really love this song and I really can’t believe how they’ve done it again, another great collab!!! I can’t wait for more of their collabs and Ariana’s comeback after getting married YEEEEET. It is now time for me to continue fangirling.
Jhanya: Personally, I feel like Ariana stole this song from The Weeknd LOL. Not in a bad way because her contribution really made the song shine. But all in all, this song was good, and definitely something I didn’t expect I needed before hearing it.
