Harry’s House is Harry Styles’ third studio album, released on the 20th of May, 2022. We see how in love Harry is in this album. If Fine Line was filled with loneliness, “soup, sex, and sun salutations,”, this third album on the artist’s discography has sushi, sideboob, and spilled beer.

Intro

Ria: “Harry Styles. That’s it. That’s the review.

Just kidding. But seriously, I love him so much more because of this whole album. I’ve been listening to this album on a loop since last night and I’m so obsessed. And there’s just something that I noticed and that is Harry’s songs age like fine wine. I mean there are songs that I used to not listen to as much but now, I’m utterly obsessed with them, and I definitely think this album will be just that.

Jhanya: I can’t believe we’re already on Harry’s third album. It feels as if the world was just using Fine Line as a therapeutic refuge from the pandemic yesterday, yet here we are with Harry’s House. The world is healing indeed. Harry’s songs for this album give us this unique, nostalgic vibe, yet also new at the same time which just makes us want to listen to it more. Same with Ria, this album has been on repeat ever since I started listening to it at 8 in the morning yesterday.

Melody & Vocals"

Jhanya: Harry showed us multiple vocal styles and I love it. I especially loved his husky low tone in Late Night Talking.

Ria: Harry’s vocals never fail and it definitely did not here. His vocal range was showcased quite beautifully, ranging from low and husky to high head voice to some falsettos. Not to mention his background vocals are just phenomenal (have you heard Cinema?? *chef’s kiss*)

Instrumentation

Ria: The instrumentation in this whole album is just *chef’s kiss*. It’s the first thing that I noticed the first time I listened to the entire album. It has a distinct synth, a jazzy vibe at times, and a beautifully layered and produced instrumentation. Not to mention the vibes of each song totally intertwine with each other.

Jhanya: Harry’s House is the best album out of the three in terms of instrumentation. The way each song unfolded using the different instruments was so pleasing to listen to and never fails to make you look forward to what the next song will deliver. The instruments used in each song were also creative and are appropriately picked for the different vibes of the songs.

Song Picks: Best Lyrics

This will also focus on lyricism NOT the meaning behind the lyrics (that will be talked about later, don’t worry hehe).

Matilda

“You showed me a power that is strong enough to bring sun to the darkest days

It's none of my business, but it's just been on my mind”

Ria: I don’t think Harry has the best songwriting skills, but when he does, it hits hard. And Matilda hits hard. I love the emotional depth and meaning of the song which is paired with great lyricism keeping things comforting and touching whilst talking about something that might’ve traumatized the persona. It’s one of Harry’s best songs and is definitely my favorite of his.

Jhanya: Matilda is definitely Harry’s best song lyrically to date. This song talks about a person with past family trauma and Harry shows it splendidly in the lyrics. The way he also tries to comfort the person through the song is very touching and calming to hear.

Song Picks: Best Melody and Instrumentation

Music for A Sushi Restaurant

"I'm not going to get lost

I'm not going to go broke"

Jhanya: Slinky bass line and bleating Fine Young Cannibals horns. Need I say more? This song was a great album opener that had me grooving from the start. The flashy, celebratory feel given by the trumpets along with the lyrics “I’m not going to get lost / I’m not going to go broke” are just the right elements to give us, the listeners, the motivation and energy to start the album on the right foot. Followed by Late Night Talking, both starting songs give a very 80s preppy vibe that really gets the listeners going.

Daydreaming

"So give me all of your love,

give me something to dream about"

Ria: Just the vibes of this song are already really calling out to me. The melody and instrumentation both intertwine really well to create such a catchy and vibe-y song and I got addicted to it really quickly. The layering of the instruments – bass, guitar, piano, drums – was done really well, and the catchy melody really complemented the synth added. All in all, I would say this is the song I got the best vibes from.

Song Picks: Most Meaningful and Relevant

Boyfriends

"Boyfriends, are they just pretending?

They don't tеll you where it's heading

And you know thе game's never ending”

Jhanya: A very lovely, acoustic ballad from Styles that talks about how many boyfriends tend to mistreat their partners by mediating a troubled relationship between couples. How Harry himself also acknowledges that he himself has had this behavior in his relationships, and not just because he witnesses it with others, makes this song even more meaningful. A man singing about insensitive men is something we love to see.

Love of My Life

“Baby, you were the love of my life”

Ria: I don’t even understand why I love this song so much because I'm not in love. This has to be one of the most meaningful and emotional songs of Harry’s. The rawness of his vocals really shows how much this song means to him and the lyrics really show great depth to his feelings. Ending the album with this song shows how open he’s being open and how he’s being vulnerable in front of all his fans and I really really love this new side to him.

Jhanya: Here, Harry shows his raw emotions and is proof of how intimate this album is to the artist. Also, showing how “home is where the heart really is”. It’s a very nice closing song, or should I say, end of a journey, to an album sung by Harry “in the comfort of his home”.

Top 3 Favorite Songs

1. Matilda

“You showed me a power that is strong enough to bring sun to the darkest days

It's none of my business, but it's just been on my mind”

2. Love of My Life

"Woah, maybe you don't know it's lost 'til you find it

It's not what I wantеd, to leave you behind"

3R. As It Was

“When everything gets in the way

Seems you cannot be replaced

And I'm the one who will stay”

Ria: It’s actually a shock for me that As It Was is in my top three favorite songs of the album. Usually, my favorite song isn’t the lead single of the album because I find it less impactful for me, but I was shocked when I loved As It Was even after hearing the whole album. You’ve probably already read our review on it, if not check it out here, so I’ll be quick to say that I really love the meaning and instrumentation of the song. Harry sings the song in a somewhat sorrowful way and sings about his loneliness and longing for the past but this is masked by the upbeat instrumentation – synths drums and beat. I think it’s a great musical irony and euphemism, and that’s why I love the song so much.

3J. Late Night Talking

“Things haven't been quite the same

There's a haze on the horizon, babe”

Jhanya: If Matilda and Love of My Life weren’t so good I really want to put this as my #1 song for this album. I would, instead be listening to this song a gazillion times in the following months to come. Harry’s vocals for this were really just *chef’s kiss* and I could be lost in it again and again. Even though one of the songs is titled “Love of My Life” I find this to be the most romantic song on the album. The energetic, and simple, yet very touching message of Harry for his lover feels very “Harry” in a sense.

Final Thoughts

Ria: Harry’s House is probably my favorite Harry album so far. I just feel that everything is more put together and everything has that cohesiveness that I often find in albums. I will not be skipping a single song and will be adding every single song to my playlist and I think this is the first time I’m doing it for a Harry Styles’ album. I definitely love Harry even more now and I can’t wait to see what other kind of music he can produce in the future. For now, let me go loop Harry’s House, again.

Jhanya: I don’t care what critics and others say. This is my favorite HS album to date. Though it didn’t have “highs” as Fine Line did, Harry’s House doesn’t have any “lows”. Just vibes. Talk about a no-skip album. This is one of the rare western albums I genuinely enjoy and will listen to as a whole on a regular basis. Harry’s House is so fun to listen to yet also very intimate at the same time. We can see an improvement in Harry’s writing style as well, so I’m definitely looking forward to what more he can deliver in the future.
