Ria: 2021 is almost ending… CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Well, we neither, but what can we do about it? Okay, enough theatrics. This year was a weird but a great year! We started this blog and we’ve been doing it for more than six months already. We’ve reviewed quite a lot from books to movies to music. So with the year almost ending, we’ll be making a recap of how our 2021 went.

Jhanya: Based on the title of this post… Have a recap I guess?

Ria: So in our special review series, we’ll first start off with the Watch Corner (WC)!! We’ll be recapping the top review among the films we reviewed this year, our favorite film review, and our favorite 2021 films. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this first special review!! LETS GET IT

In The Heights

Ria: This review was super fun because I enjoyed both watching it and reviewing it. This movie is actually also my favorite 2021 film but I’ll be talking about a different one below because this is our joint favorite review. To be honest, I only heard about this from Jhanya. I am legit a dumb person when it comes to movies. I know nothing. Anyways, I’m so happy that Jhanya introduced me to this because this movie just *chef’s kiss*. It ticks my boxes in plot, music, cinematography, and acting. And this film really made me believe in movie musicals again. That there is really still some hope for it. So I really recommend you guys to watch this, and of course, check out our review on it ;)

Jhanya: To be honest this review was just pure fun. The film already was, but being able to write about it and recall my experience watching the film was an added plus factor. While writing the review, I remember being hyped about it because I had to keep rewatching In The Heights to fact-check our review which also resulted in me having all the songs stuck in my head for the following days. This film also reinforced my want to write reviews in general. In The Heights is the type of film that makes you want to talk about it and your experience with another person.

Jhanya & Ria's 2021 Faves

#1 Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Destin Daniel Cretton

Call me cliche and mainstream, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings really takes the top spot as the best film I watched in 2021. It was such a unique MCU film that had me forget it was an MCU film until the final battle (which is, of course, almost fully CGI). Shang-Chi also has my favorite MCU villain besides Loki, Xu Wenwu. I loved how his character was fully fleshed out and was genuinely threatening. I’m not kidding when I say that he’s the only villain in the MCU that gave me chills and I was actually scared of haha. I also like the fact that despite being the bad guy, he was still a family man and came to a full circle. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is definitely one of the best MCU films to date along with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Black Panther.

The Runner-Up film for me would be Eternals. YES. I watched it at the cinema and I liked it. In fact, I think it’s better than Black Widow and doesn’t deserve to be rated under 75%. I score it a solid 8.5 because I gave it a bonus 1 point for its breathtaking cinematography. It’s one of the few MCU films that actually dared to deviate from the superhero format and try something new. I understand that many think the plot was bad, but to be honest, I think it seems worse because we don’t have any connections with the characters and we’re not familiar with their story. Instead of starting from the beginning of the Eternals’ story on Earth, they dropped us right in the middle of the plot and tried to “catch us up” by throwing in a few flashbacks when needed. It would’ve been better if they just released an introductory film for the Eternals when they arrived on Earth 700 years ago and tried to eliminate the Deviants on Earth, then followed up with a sequel that starts where the actual film started. I will stand my ground in saying that this is a genuinely good film that doesn’t deserve the amount of hate it has (especially from critics).

#1 Black Widow

Cate Shortland

OKAY I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I REALLY DON’T KNOW AND HAVEN’T WATCHED A LOT OF MOVIES OUTSIDE WHAT WE REVIEWED. (and my top one is already our top review) SO I’M GOING WITH THIS. I watched more kdramas and cdramas so please don’t come for me if you guys don’t like my top picks. Legit I know there are a lot better movies, it's just that I haven’t watched it. But anyways.

This movie is something I’ve been looking forward to since before the pandemic. Black Widow is one of my favorite characters in the MCU and I just really love her and I still couldn’t believe that she doesn’t have her own movie. So when the announcement came that there would FINALLY be her own movie I was overjoyed. And although there were some rough edges to this movie, I’m so happy I got it. And I’m also so happy to have finally see more of her life and family outside the Avengers. It’s also great to finally know what happened in Budapest. Anyways!! Comment and recommend some movies for me to watch PLEASE.

Final Thoughts

Jhanya: 2021 was quite the year for cinema. All the highly anticipated films that were delayed in the last year due to the pandemic have finally been released and some were disappointing, while some were worth all the hype. To be completely honest though, I’m just happy that we can finally get to watch films in the cinema again. It’s really a completely different experience that beats watching at home.

I can’t wait for the films releasing next year! Also, I should watch Spiderman: No Way Home soon before the spoilers catch up to me hahaha

Ria: This year's watch corner was quite a whirlwind. Lots of movies came out (that I probably didn't see, but heard of) some nice, some awesome, and some horrible. And even though I was only able to watch a few, I'm still happy I was able to watch them. Super duper looking forward to next year. I hope I can finally watch a movie in the cinema soon. AND!! Spiderman: No Way Home is DEFINITELY on my to watch list. I am praying n hoping!!!

See you guys on our next special! xx
