Jhanya: Action, after action, after action, is the charm of the Mission: Impossible franchise as a whole. It never fails to keep its audience at the edge of its seats. And this movie delivered splendidly. By the end of the film, I was honestly tired from keeping up with everything that happened in the past 2 ½ hours. And it isn’t a bad thing!

Ria: BIAS IS REAL. Forewarning, Ria’s going to be very very very biased because I’ve loved the Mission: Impossible series ever since the start. And Tom Cruise is just 😍.

Mission: Impossible: Fallout is one of the best movies in the series. Although it is not my favorite (Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation, forever) it is in the very top tier in the few movies that I watch and really love. This movie is all action and the plot twists are so reaaaaal. Anyways, let’s get into it!

Jhanya: Most action movies these days just throw in the action scenes for the fun of it. Just for the sake of showing the audience that what they’re watching IS an action movie. But in the usual Mission: Impossible manner, EVERY.SINGLE.THING. that Ethan Hunt and his team do is a matter of life and death. There are lives at stake no matter what. And that is the beauty of it all. Because when they do get something done despite all the risks and near-death experiences (which is A LOT by the way), it gives the viewer immense satisfaction. They don’t leave the audience hanging off a cliff, but at the same time showing that there is something more to the story at the end (M:I7 and 8 are coming soon wahoo).

Ria: Just like what Jhanya said, this Mission: Impossible has a lot of life-threatening scenes, too many to count actually. At times, I feel like I’m the one falling off the cliff HAHAHAAHAH but even with all the action, there is a lot more to the story. There is a moral lesson that is equally as important. Additionally, I cannot wait for the next two movies COMING OUT SOOOOONNNN WAAHHH *fangirling*

Jhanya: The overall plot of the film, though a bit cliche, was good. The many sequences fit well together and were pretty well-paced throughout the two and a half hours. How this was a direct sequel to Rogue Nation, the other best film in the franchise, is also great. Mission: Impossible has been slowly building its plot over the years, and it has aged beautifully so far. The whole case with Solomon Lane, and how he connects to all of their problems in the current and previous films was executed splendidly. His deeper agenda of also wanting to get revenge on Ethan Hunt after what he did to him in Rogue Nation gave Lane’s character an extra layer of depth that’s often failed to be seen in other villains these days.

Ria: True, the plotline was quite cliche and they’ve already saved the world from a bomb going off in past movies, but the scenes leading up to it were a lot different. And even with the long movie (approx. two and a half hours), it was fast-paced, and wrapped everything up well, leaving no loopholes. This movie is a sequel to my favorite MI movie and starts two years after Solomon Lane gets captured.

Jhanya: Now let’s talk about the rest of the cast and characters.

Let’s start with Henry Cavill’s role, August Walker. I was shocked, to be honest. I didn’t expect him to pull off his role so well. I definitely understood why he chose to keep the mustache for this film while shooting for Justice League. This role was worth it, and he did so well too. I personally don’t understand why people are hating on his acting and look in the film, the mustache looks good OKAY. In all seriousness, Walker was a confusing character throughout the film. There were times where he was so badass, but there were also times when I question how he became a CIA agent in the first place. In the end, of course, I understood that most of his “dumb” moments had the purpose of putting Ethan’s life at risk, which is genius. Though it was pretty obvious that he was the bad guy, especially when he says that Ethan is John Lark and manipulates the evidence from their mission in Paris.

Ria: It’s Superman, HAHAHAHAAHA. I actually haven’t watched him in Superman (looks like it’s time to do Marvel and DC reviews LOL). Anyway, I hated Agent Walker from the start. MAYBE not hate, but strongly dislike. He didn’t treat Ethan like an equal even though Ethan is a lot lot lot better than him. But, his acting was great. All throughout, his acting was on point with the character and he made a pretty good bad guy. And like what Jhanya has said, his “dumb” actions all make sense in the end. I still hate him though.

Jhanya: And of course the main, main character, Ethan Hunt. How Cruise keeps doing these stunts and survives multiple injuries every time he shoots one of these films DESPITE BEING ALMOST 60 is beyond me. Show me that fountain of youth right now LMAO. Seriously though, Cruise did swimmingly in Fallout. At this point, he and Ethan Hunt can really be considered as the same person, no doubt about it. Ethan, as usual, let personal attachments get in the way of his job, which is why the events in this movie are happening in the first place. As Luther said, “We’re in this mess because Ethan wouldn’t let me die.” But this is what makes Ethan Hunt, Ethan Hunt. He’s the ultimate spy that can survive anything, but no matter what happens, his priority is always his friends and the innocent people, even if it causes a setback in the mission. It may seem like a weakness, but it’s what makes him the daredevil that he is. He uses these motivations to keep pushing and take the next leap needed to defeat whatever anarchist organization he’s fighting.

Ria: OKAY I JUST GOTTA SAY. Tom Cruise what a king. He’s like how old and he’s STILL doing these stunts HIMSELF. LIKE OMG???? And honestly, it is on my bucket list to go skydiving with Tom Cruise, like PLEASE. Anyways, Ethan Hunt is not my favorite character but I really love his character. He has equal parts funny, serious, daredevil, and out of his mind. Sometimes I even think Tom Cruise and Ethan Hunt have become one person. What makes Hunt so unique is his love and protective nature over his friends. He risked losing the plutonium to save Luther, his longest friend, and this character is both his Achilles Heel and his strength (as the Secretary said). It’s really amazing how he’s survived through all that he’s been through but that’s also what makes him a really good agent and spy. It’s the experience.

Jhanya: For the rest of the IMF team, they’re still the smartest, yet barely surviving, spy team of Ethan Hunt, with a final new addition, named Ilsa Faust. If you thought Ilsa was a badass in the Rogue Nation, she’s even deadlier in this one (like the absolute queen that she is). You don’t just face off Ethan Hunt with a gun, let him run you over with a car and still survive. Though I think she did more saving in this film rather than killing and stealing, thankfully. Meeting Julia also helped Ilsa understand Ethan more, and this helped her relationship with Ethan reach a deeper level, past respect, and I can’t wait for them to explore more of it in the next two films.

Ria: OMG ILSA FAUST WHAT A QUEEN. I. LOVE HER. She’s the reason I love MI 5 and MI 6 so much. Out of all the partners Ethan has had, Ilsa is my favorite (let’s not count Julia, his ex-wife). Ilsa is so badass I can’t get enough of her. I mean, her signature move of wrapping her legs around a person’s neck to bring them down is awesome. Sometimes I even want to be like her (except with a low killing count). In this movie, she became even more cool. This is some queen sh** guys. I am absolutely just gushing over here HAHAHAHAHA I honestly can wait to see her in the next two movies (HOPEFULLY) and see her relationship with Ethan finally blossom.

Jhanya: Benji and Luther are still the same. Smart af, funny, and helpful, but always come the closest to death out of everyone. They’re always the sacrificial lambs when it comes to being held hostage or literally hanging off a noose. It’s also nice to see them have more lines in this film, most of their jokes landed perfectly, bringing more energy to the already adrenaline-filled film.

Ria: BENJI IS MY BABY. Oh, gosh, I love Benji (actually this is me with each character). But, yea, Benji is the comic relief of the movie, as usual. He gives Ethan the humor he needs in life and the lightness of the movie. He’s known Ethan for so long that he’s so used to his antics already. I mean he finds it best not to know what Ethan is up to anymore so as to not give him a heart attack.

Luther also the best best friend anyone could ever have. Luther has been part of the MI series from the start. He’s the other person who gives comic relief in the movie, but not as much. He’s also the super techy person that I admire since I absolutely suck at technology. He’s so smart and he keeps Ethan grounded. His relationship with Ethan is something I dream of having. Their friendship, honestly, can never be broken, like ever.

Jhanya: Speaking of jokes, the jokes and snippets of comedy brought into the film felt natural, both storyline and character-wise making it even more fun and entertaining to watch. I like how they didn’t make random jokes out of the blue just for the sake of comic relief (a new common trend in films today). It also shows that each character in the film is still human, not just living machines who want to get the job done.

Ria: Super agree with Jhanya here! The humor added into the movie was not forced at all. They all felt so natural and so in character. I mean, it’s something you’d expect that character to say. And I love how the snippets made the character a real person. Like they’re not all just spies, just agents, just always saving the world kind of character. We see how they’ve become a real person.

I also want to mention the cinematography and visual effects of the movie. The fact that they always aim to avoid using CGI makes everything so unreal actually. It’s so ironic. I think this is because of all the stunts being done that it seems so unlikely to happen without a lot of computer help. But in the many interviews being done, it has been said that they always try to make everything real without much help from the computer. And so, I can’t help but praise the scenic shots in the different locations they shot in. Everything looked picturesque and actually matched the tone of that scene.

Final Thoughts:

Jhanya: The only complaint I really have for this film’s plot is how I couldn’t get a break AT ALL. I mean, it’s good that you’re keeping the viewer hooked, but man that was tiring. This movie was so much fun that I even forgot to type notes at some parts because of how engrossed I was in the film. That in itself explains how good this film was for me and I definitely recommend it to all movie and action lovers. What amazes me the most though is how consistent Mission: Impossible has been throughout its 6 films. Sure, M:I2 wasn’t the best, but it still has that “action after action” charm to it, and the stakes are still high making every scene important to the story, and not feel unnecessary. The fact that it also just keeps getting better and better through the years instead of flopping over time is an amazing feat for a franchise that is over 2 decades old. (At least J.J. Abrams got this one right smh)

Ria: No complaints from me!! I love this movie and the MI series too much. But, really, this movie ticked off all my boxes. Great plot with a balanced amount of serious, funny, plot twists, and life-threatening scenes, great acting from all characters, awesome cinematography, and the visual effects were done beautifully. This movie made me laugh, my heart go boom, and kept me seated at the edge of my seat. I think it’s more serious than MI: Rogue Nation which is why I like the other more, but definitely, this is in my top movies.

The fact also that this film series hasn’t flopped over time yet, is also such an amazing feat. I am really really really looking forward to the next two movies. So, I highly recommend watching the whole film series now!! Especially MI: Rogue Nation and Fallout hehe (i really am so biased)
