A Secret Service
Joy Jenkins

Congratulations to A Secret Service for being the Top Book Corner Review of 2021. This is actually the first book that we reviewed and the only book we gave 5 stars to and DASERB. The book is an all-rounder: interesting plot, good writing, awesome characters, and balanced plot and side plots. This book is also self-published, which is stereotyped as bad books, but A Secret Service is definitely not.

The Inheritance Games

Ria: This review was super duper fun for me to do. First, reading it was already a whirlwind with the mystery, puzzles, and brain games which really caught my attention and made me want to know everything that happens. The characters were also super fun and different from each other so it was great to see how they interacted and how the whole plot rolls out. Writing the review was fun because I wanted to keep it spoiler-free (which is SO HARD). I want readers to be able to experience the puzzles and the mystery firsthand, without spoilers so writing the review was a challenge, but that was what made the whole thing fun.
Jhanya: I’m not lying when I say that I couldn’t put this book down when I started reading it. It was that engaging. I really finished the book in one sitting hahaha I liked how it made the gears on my brain turn and made me laugh. Being able to reread the book because of the review was also super fun because I was able to spot the foreshadowing and clues I missed while reading. This is also the first book review I struggled to write because I was still learning to avoid writing spoilers like Ria haha The Inheritance Games will continue have a special place in my heart and I can’t wait for the final book next year.
Jhanya & Ria's 2021 Faves
#1 People We Meet On Vacation
Emily Henry

Given how much I loved Beach Read, I’m not surprised at all that I also loved this book. Emily Henry is the author of my favorite romance books of the year twice in a row (2020 & 2021) and it really shows just how good her books are. People We Meet On Vacation is pretty different from Beach Read in terms of plot and premise, but it has a similar writing style. The plot follows Poppy and Alex, two best friends who have nothing in common, finding happiness on their first road trip together after having a fall-out two years ago. It’s like a mash of When Harry Met Sally and Love, Rosie (no joke, 2 of my top 3 favorite romance movies of all time) combined and I simply *swoon* just thinking about it. I won’t say any more specific details about the story because we’ll legit be reviewing this book in January as it won the 13th Annual Goodreads Choice Awards for Romance a few weeks ago haha.
#1 Our Violent Ends
Chloe Gong

Our Violent Ends was released just a month ago and it’s definitely my favorite 2021 book. I’ve been on SUCH a bad reading slump this whole 2021. I’ve read less than 20 books, which is so bad for me so I don’t really have many books to choose from. I’m super happy with my top 2021 book though, because this book checks all my boxes: awesome, complex characters, interesting plot (OH THE ROMANCE AND TWISTS I CANT), writing, and originality. It also has such a good connection to the previous book but, at the same time, totally different. With the characters, I already love almost all of them from the first book and this just solidified how much of a person all of them are. They’re flawed but strong and each decision they make actually makes sense. With the plot, I literally was on the edge of my seat the whole time. At several points, I thought something was going to happen, but nOPE. So yea, this book is just so great (check out our more comprehensive review here!). Chloe Gong, what a queen, I can’t wait for the gems that she’ll be releasing next.
Final Thoughts
Jhanya: It wasn’t really a very productive year for me when it comes to reading. It’s been a while since I only read < 20 books in one year ;-; because 2021 was no joke in terms of stress and I’m just thankful for surviving it LOL
Ria: As I said earlier, I was in such a reading slump, I have no idea what happened, but it did so the books that I read were just really few and most were the ones that Jhanya recommended for the blog. Anyways, I hope that I get out of this slump soon (I’ve been on booktube lately so maybe!) and I hope 2022 would be a lot better.
Once again, thank you so much to everyone for being with us this 2021. We know we don’t have the most amount of viewers, but the few that we have are the ones that continue to keep us going. Here’s to a prosperous and hopeful New Year, 2022!
